Oakley Elementary School received funds from the State Department of Education to implement character education. In the spring, community members, students, and parents picked nine traits that they felt were important to focus on for the school year. We have a trait a month that students focus on and learn about during a lesson. Throughout the month students, teachers, and patrons are looking for students who are showing outstanding character. At the end of the month, the school has an assembly to focus on the trait and discuss who showed outstanding character. We have also included community members and business owners to help look for students showing outstanding character in their businesses. Every morning during announcements a short story or quote is said that ties in with the traits our school has chosen to focus on. Students were also given planners that have quotes about people of character. Our teachers met in the summer and integrated character education within our curriculum. For example, if a teacher is doing a lesson in mathematics and it is a difficult topic, the teacher would share an example of Alexander Graham Bell and how he had to use perseverance to finish what he started. We feel character education is important, and we are excited to see our students develop these characteristics so they may use them throughout their lives.
