Emergency Medical Technician
Year Two: Health Care Occupations I, senior or 12th grade status and valid drivers license.
135 hours of classroom required. 20 patient contacts after school and weekend clinical observation time to be divided among hospital emergency departments and ambulance services. Students will learn all aspects of emergency basic life support which includes: treatment of trauma (bleeding, wounds, shock, fractures), and treatment of medical problems (respiratory problems, cardiac problems, allergic reactions, diabetes, stroke, environmental emergencies). Use of basic care equipment which includes splints, c-collar, backboards, airway management devices and automated defibrillator will be taught along with medications such as oxygen, activated charcoal, ipecac, inhalers, epinephrine auto injectors, oral glucose and nitroglycerin. Students will build upon their knowledge of medical and legal topics, medical terminology, drugs (review of recreational drugs) and cover triage, critical incident stress management, extrication, and hazardous materials. Seven college credits are available - 2 credits clinical and 5 credits didactic.
