Carpe Diem String Quartet

A classical string quartet that rocks? Yes!

Carpe Diem String Quartet is an exciting group that is becoming one of the most versatile ensembles of their generation. The group performs the classical string quartet repertoire, but their musical passion has led them down the paths of Gypsy, tango, folk, pop, rock, and jazz-inspired music.

Carpe Diem’s latest disc was selected for the 2009 Grammy Awards Entry List in no fewer than four categories: Best Classical Album, Best Chamber Music Performance, Best New Artist, and Best Engineered Album-Classical. Recent ambitious projects include the complete recordings of the nine string quartets of Sergey Taneyev and a collaboration with Columbus Dance Theater aired by WOSU-PBS television.

With outside-the-box programs, electrifying performances, and a passion for audience engagement, Carpe Diem has earned critical acclaim and concert ovation.

Deborah Henson-Conant

She’s a one-woman, blues-flamenco-Celtic-funk-folk-jazz-playing dynamo. She solos like a rock guitarist. She tells tall tales with the timing of a stand-up comic. She’s an irrepressible, lyrical spirit.

But wait till you see that harp.

Deborah Henson-Conant is a Grammy-nominated artist who sings and plays a 36-string custom-built electric “harness harp” in styles ranging from full-out bluesy to heart-wrenching ballad. She has toured with the Boston Pops, starred in a PBS special, lectured at the Paris Conservatory and played at the Kennedy Center. The Grammy-nominated star has been featured on NBC, CBS, CNN and NPR.

Deborah’s albums range from Latin jazz to Celtic, blues, folk-pop and spoken word. But on stage, she’s electric, bringing vibrant passion to a powerful musical journey, taking audiences along for the ride. See her once and you’ll never view or hear a harp the same way again.

MARCH 9, 2012 - FRIDAY 7:30 PM

The Indigo Ensemble

What does it take for an accomplished chamber quartet to set aside Ravel and Bach? Jazz – cool, bluesy jazz.

The Indigo Ensemble is multinational and multitalented, joined in an eager exploration of music. Rodrigo Guzmán is a classical concert guitarist who easily transitions to more modern fare. Johannes Neupertis is a virtuoso violinist, adept at everything from Schubert to swing to Sting. Double bassist Peter Nelson is at home both with philharmonics and local jazz clubs. And Rafael de Torres works as a concert pianist but relaxes behind whatever keyboard he faces.

This exhilarating group’s instrumentation is nontraditional, and their repertoire is completely uninhibited, ranging from Duke Ellington to Jimi Hendrix, Astor Piazzolla and Hugo Blanco. Their singular goal is to create intimate and exciting music without borders, connecting with each other and the audience.
